Lake Region Youth Tour Coordinator Visits Local Schools to Promote Washington, D.C. Opportunity

Lake Region Electric Cooperative’s Youth Tour Coordinator, JuaNita Keener, has begun visiting high schools throughout the cooperative’s service territory to share an exciting opportunity with local students. High school juniors have the chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., through the Oklahoma Youth Tour program, a prize valued at more than $4,000.

Recently, Keener visited Wagoner High School to speak with students about the contest and the life-changing experiences the Youth Tour offers. Adding a special touch to the visit, last year’s Lake Region Youth Tour winner, Gracie Shaw—now a senior—joined the discussion. Shaw shared her personal experience, offered encouragement, and answered questions for juniors considering entering this year’s competition.

The Oklahoma Youth Tour provides students with the opportunity to travel to the nation’s capital from June 13–19, 2026. During the week-long trip, students explore historic landmarks, meet peers from across Oklahoma, and learn more about leadership, government, and the cooperative business model. All expenses are covered, including airfare, lodging, meals, tours, and activities.

To enter the contest, interested juniors must write a 500-word, typed, double-spaced essay on the topic “Oklahoma Rural Electric Cooperatives.” Each participating school will select its top two essays to advance to the final round of judging. Finalists will compete on February 11, 2026, at the Lake Region Event Center in Hulbert, Oklahoma, where they will be evaluated on knowledge, speaking ability, and presentation skills.

Keener will continue visiting schools across the Lake Region service area to explain the contest, answer questions, and encourage student participation. One student will be selected to join 60 to 80 other Oklahoma juniors on this unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C.

Students interested in learning more are encouraged to contact their school counselor or Lake Region Electric Cooperative. Full contest details, including entry requirements and resources, are available at www.lrecok.coop/youth-tour.

This unique opportunity offers students a chance to grow, learn, and create lasting memories—starting with putting pen to paper and writing their essay.
