Dove Season Safety: Protect Yourself and Utility Equipment
Dove season kicks off September 1 in Oklahoma, and hunters across the state are getting ready to head to the fields. As you prepare for opening day, Lake Region Electric Cooperative reminds hunters to keep safety at the forefront, especially when hunting near electrical and fiber infrastructure. Power lines, utility poles, transformers, fiber lines and other equipment can sometimes be located near fields and other popular hunting areas. Never shoot at or near electrical or fiber equipment. A single shot can damage critical infrastructure, resulting in costly repairs and unnecessary power or internet outages for homes, farms and businesses. More importantly, damaged electrical equipment can create an extremely dangerous situation for hunters, property owners, utility crews and others in the area.
Before taking a shot, always identify your target and know what is beyond it. Be aware of power lines, poles, transformers and other utility equipment in your surroundings, and never use utility equipment as a target or backstop.
