7 Tips to Protect Yourself from Scams – Advice from News On 6 at the Women in Business Event
Yesterday, Juanita and Kristen attended the Women in Business event hosted by the Wagoner Area Chamber of Commerce at Blue Sky Bank, where Lori Fullbright from News On 6 shared valuable advice on how to spot and avoid scams. Her message was too important not to share!
Lori said if you remember these seven things, you and your loved ones can avoid being scammed:
- They contact you out of the blue — a random call, email, text, or social media message.
- Something urgent has happened — your account’s been hacked, or a loved one’s in trouble.
- They need you to do something — click a link, call a number, scan a QR code. Don’t!
- They want money — and it’s always untraceable: gift cards, Bitcoin, money transfers, or cash.
- They tell you to lie — if they say “don’t tell the cashier why you’re buying gift cards,” it’s a scam.
- They tell you to keep a secret — real organizations will never ask for secrecy.
- They tell you to move your money to protect it — it’s a scam, every time.
Lori reminded us that most scammers operate overseas, so the best defense is to stay alert and refuse to give them our money or information. We’re thankful for Lori’s powerful presentation and wanted to pass along these reminders to help keep our members safe.
